Probiotics Side Effects – 5 Unfavourable Reactions

When hosted in the human body, probiotics are believed to be useful. They are meant to be administered in adequate quantities and not exceeded for them to confer the optimum health benefit.

Some of the side effects are listed below: tendernesss of muscles, pain in the muscles and body aches as well as fevers. It is also possible to get infections in the upper section of the respiratory tract. This particular type is similar to common cold. Of all users of probiotics, it has been found that at most, 4.3 percent develop these infections. Related side effects include flu and an infection of the sinuses. Both these are experience by a possible total of 4.8 % of probiotics users.

Some patients also experience joint pains after using probiotics. Although it is not severe, it can cause worry since there are known diseases whose main symptoms are to do with joint pains. Arthritis is one of them. With probiotics- related joints pains, there is nothing to worry about since it lasts only a while. If you are to continue with the probiotics, it would be advisable to seek a separate treatment for the joints to avoid continued distress. Of all users of probiotics, only 3% show signs of joint pains.

4.1 % of users are at risk of developing diarrhoea. You should take note that many side effects of this drug are related in one way or another with the digestive tract. It is possible to experience diarrhoea after using probiotics. There is actually a mode of treatment where the drug is used specifically to induce that same diarrhoea. Mostly, this is meant to clean the tract.

While the natural residence of probiotics is in the large intestines, due to their activities, menopausal women have been known to develop urinary tract infections. Sometimes too, they contract vaginitis. These women have to resort to antibiotics to treat their infections while continuing to tale probiotics. In some cases, infections can be so severe that the doctor advises a discontinuation of the drug’s use.

The metabolic process of your body may be affected as to leave the immune system stimulated. When the immune system is stimulated, there is the risk of developing problems related with overprotection within the body.

Fatigue is also reported to be the side effect most experienced by 2.8% of users. This is not such a strange reaction. Some diseases are capable of inducing fatigue on their own and it should not be a scary thing when you consider using probiotics. In any case, fatigue suggests that a deeply involving process has diverted the use of energies in your body.

When you understand these side effects, it should be easy to decide when a drug is working for you or against you.

Delightful Fitness Aids for a Healthy Lifestyle

The well-known English novelist Dorothy 'Dodie' Gladys Smith had shared her views on a stimulating bath. And this is what she had to say: "Father says hot water can be as stimulating as an alcoholic drink and though I never come by one … I can well believe it." Indeed, she was right since bathing in hot water is amazingly refreshing for both the mind and body.

The elite among the Romans of yore used to spend hours in sauna baths and thus regale in their pastime. Medically it has been proved that bathing in mild hot water opens up the pores of the skin which in turn is extremely good for health. On this score, it is worthwhile to note that many natural hot springs have therapeutic values in them.

Incidentally, one need not go in search of such hot springs. Today, the delights of hot springs could be had at the backyard of one's home. These are marketed globally by different companies dealing in health and fitness systems. Price tag-wise, these hot tubs are not essentially meant solely for the rich and expensive. There are models that are affordable for everyone to begin the journey to relaxation.

They come in various dimensions and each hot tub is spacious enough for five to seven persons to squat and share those delightful moments. These tubs, depending on the model, have systems of jets through which the water splashes on the body to render an invigorating experience of water massage.

These branded hot tubs are the fruits of a self-made person named Keith who had a penchant for good things in life and designed the first prototype in 1978. Interestingly, the makers of these hot tubs have kept human ergonomics comfort in view while designing and manufacturing as such the curved contoured seats fit the human body perfectly. The water jets are positioned at appropriate spots in a hot tub.

The companies that market these products have numerous other systems that are domestically manufactured as well as imported to maintain healthy body and mind. They come in two versions – Elevation series and Integrity series. According to the users, the Elevation version is for an immersive exercise experience.

It has integrated consoles and attachable TVs, iPod, video to watch choicest programs while exercising or a music system to listen to favorite inspirational tunes. It has a programmed trainer that charts out different exercises alongside the results from it. In the Integrity series, the bike is reported to be aesthetic in design with facilities for iPod and TV controls for a melodious experience.

Type 2 Diabetes and Healthy Food Choices – What Are The Dirty Dozen of Fruits and Vegetables?

We often hear if we choose to exercise and eat properly, our pancreas will thank us by functioning better and reduce our chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Many of you watching your health will have heard of a list of produce referred to as the "dirty dozen." What is this list and how do the contents impact your life and your body? The dirty dozen is a term used to describe certain fruits and vegetables, maybe even some of your favorites, impacted negatively by pesticides. The produce listed as the "dirty dozen" are thought to be more heavily contaminated by pesticides than other produce and, as such, it is wise for you to steer clear of them if you are hoping to maintain good health.

Researchers have also connected the ingestion of pesticides as a risk to the developing brain of the fetus during pregnancy and even into early childhood. In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a report recommending limiting foods containing pesticides in children as much as possible. While it is unfortunate to have to "avoid" fresh fruits and vegetables as they are considered to be very healthy for the body what you do need to remember is when they are contaminated due to the use of pesticides, they will not be doing anything positive for your health. These chemicals will be entering your system, and they may be doing more damage to your body than benefiting your health.

So what are the "dirty dozen list of fruit and vegetables?" The following are the current list to steer clear of …

  • strawberries (these are considered to be especially harmful. Researchers found over one-third of the berries tested contained 10 or more pesticides),
  • spinach,
  • nectarines,
  • apples,
  • peaches,
  • pears,
  • cherries,
  • grapes,
  • celery,
  • tomatoes,
  • sweet bell peppers, and
  • potatoes.

While you can purchase conventional varieties and then focus on washing them well, it has been found a high amount of pesticide residue remains. Therefore, it can be best to make sure you purchase organic produce, provided your budget allows. If your budget does not allow you to buy organic products, then you may want to avoid them entirely.

Many other "conventional" options offer a healthier choice and are deemed to be the "clean 15." These include …

  • avocados,
  • sweet corn,
  • pineapples,
  • cabbage,
  • onions,
  • frozen sweet peas,
  • papayas,
  • asparagus,
  • mangos,
  • eggplant,
  • honeydew melon,
  • kiwifruit,
  • cantaloupe,
  • broccoli, and
  • cauliflower.

As you can see, there are a variety of tasty options to choose from if you want to continue to maintain a healthy intake of fresh produce but limit your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and pesticides. While we do not instantly notice the side effects and symptoms from taking in damaging chemicals; over the years it does add up and can increase your risk factor for many diseases including cancer. Shop smart, and you will have no problem avoiding this issue!

Tips On How To Select The Best Dog Probiotic Supplement

Just like humans, dogs can also suffer from gastrointestinal disorders from time to time. In fact, according to various studies, gastrointestinal issues are the second most common health problem in dogs, after skin diseases. The common causes of these gastrointestinal illnesses include parasites such as hookworm, giardia, and whipworm and giardia. A dog's tendency to eat anything such as table scraps, rubbish in the trash can, and drinking from the toilet are also some of the usual causes of gastrointestinal diseases.

Many trusted vets say that to resolve acute and chronic gastrointestinal disorders, giving dogs probiotic supplements is a good idea. When dogs ingest these supplemental probiotics, the gut-dwelling "good bacteria" can help in assisting digestion and fend off gastrointestinal maladies in your canine friends.

There are various probiotic supplements for dogs in the market today. How can you make sure you will be choosing the best one for your pet? Below are some tips you can follow:

Read the species and strains of probiotics the product has.

A good supplement should have at least 10 stains or species of probiotics. To illustrate this, take for example Lactobacillus acidophilus – a particular form of probiotic. If you are buying a product that has this ingredient, take note that Lactobacillus is the genus, acidphilus is the species, and DDS-1 is the strain. The product you will buy should include at least 10 of the above examples. Keep in mind that the more strains the product has, the better since its diversity will ensure that the good flora in your dog's gastrointestinal tract is varied enough to protect against all of the bad strains of bacteria.

Take note of the number of Colony Forming Units or CFUs per gram.

CFUs are a scientific measurement of the viable microbes or bacteria in a probiotic. Make sure that the dog probiotic supplement you get contains at least 20 million CFUs per gram. However, a product that contains billions of CFUs is, of course, more desirable. This is to ensure that enough viable probiotics reach the gastrointestinal system of the dog.

Make sure the product meets the GMP requirements.

Don't be easily misled by any product that claims to be probiotic. Some of these products may not even contain any clinically validated strains. To make sure that you will be purchasing the best probiotic supplement for your dog, choose one that meets or exceeds the 'Good Manufacturing Products' or GMP ISO Requirements. Some products may have labels that do not contain this detail so take the time to contact the manufacturer or go online.

Check the specified storage conditions.

Finally, find out where the product has to be stored to ensure maximum survival of the probiotic. Some products may also call for specialized storage requirements that you may not be able to meet so take the time to follow this tip.

A Healthy Lifestyle Requires Healthy Cookware – Why?

The foundation for a healthy life is embedded in providing the body healthy food. A well-balanced diet every day is the key to keeping your body functions efficient. While you may be on a wholesome balanced diet, there is one other factor that can steal the nutrients and make your food toxic – your cookware. Thus, in order to cook nutritious food, you need healthy cookware as much as you need healthy ingredients.

What's Wrong with Conventional Cookware:

The body can eliminate the natural bad that you ingest with food but toxins in food is another thing. Toxins leaching from conventional cookware contaminate your food and start accumulating in blood, tissues and organs. Over time it compromises the immune system and lays the foundation for various health problems.

How Does This Leaching Happen?

Metals and ceramics are the most commonly used materials for making cookware these days. While metals are naturally reactive, ceramics are laden with chemicals that contain metal oxides and glazed with paint-like substances that have their own side-effects. As much as they are attractive to the eyes they are harmful to the body.

While cooking, the metal ions and chemicals leach by reacting to the bio-chemicals in the food. These toxins then replace essential nutrients in cells all over the body. These dysfunctional cells cause detrimental changes in organs and result in dangerous diseases.

Equally Bad Is What Happens to The Foods Nutrients:

The heat from metal / ceramic cookware is harsh and destroys delicate nutrients, further depleting essential nutrients. When the body is fed with such nutritionally depleted diet, it not only gets weak but fails to overcome the bad effects of toxins. In this way, the wrong cookware can greatly reduce the health value of food and make it toxic.

Truly Healthy Lifestyle Calls for Healthy Cookware

If you are hoping to live a truly healthy lifestyle, you need a truly healthy cookware. History teaches us that the healthiest cookware used for the longest of time was made from clay. Unglazed primary clay (or pure clay) with absolutely no chemical content is ideal for making naturally healthy cookware.

Pure clay is completely inert and doesn't leach anything into your food. It's unique far infrared heat is good for delicate nutrients and cooks without damaging them. It is by far the only natural cookware that tends to remove toxins from food while cooking instead of adding more to it. By using such healthy cookware, you can make sure that your food is rich in nutrition and free from toxins – just the way it's needed for a healthy lifestyle.

So as you plan your healthy lifestyle make sure you keep healthy cookware in mind so the food you have prepared with care can remain healthy and nutritious by the end of the cooking process.

Too Much Good Healthy Food Can Kill You

Water is essential for life and we need to consume it in order to stay healthy but when too much is taken it is known to kill. That was driven home when dizziness and unwell feelings have had me involuntarily taking it easy. At times my legs were too heavy and tired to walk while my arms feel like they are being dragged from their sockets. My only respite has been doing more in the garden with frequent brakes.

During the cold winter months it is natural to turn to the good leafy green vegetables and the oft promoted super foods. It was with great pride and joy that my patch sports them in abundance. Bok Choy, which grows so quick one can pick leaves everyday while it thrives. Kale, which never seems to be a trouble to grow, and spinach, which is my favourite.

From around the start of winter they became my staples every night. Knowing the benefit they give with their super abundance of essential elements and vitamins a short burst of heat in the micro-wave had them ready to eat.

Following the nightly meal, it is a treat to pamper my stomach with yoghurt and blueberries. Delicious and moorish even the cats front up to lick the plate. Almonds have been another staple recommended by dieticians for a healthy gut.

So with all this goodness inside why is my body letting me down. Tired aching muscles, nausea feelings and then the dizziness that has often sent me spinning towards a chair.

Doctors, Naturopaths, PT trainers and others all suggested different causes. From stones in the ears to a damaged shoulder everything was suggested but nothing seemed to fit.

As a spiritual person it is normal for me to consult the Spirit for answers and they came thick and fast. Looking at the Bok Choy waving its lovely leaves amidst the other great foods it hit me. What is it about that vegetable that could make me sick.

It has been like poisoning whereby my brain becomes cloudy and then my body feels wobbly. Led to the Internet the riddle was soon solved.

While bok choy, kale, spinach, etc. are super foods with components to block cancer growth and even prevent diabetes, they contain a high amount of potassium. Symptoms of too much of that element exactly matches mine. Lethargy, nausea, and dizziness are part of it. Almond milk and nuts are also full of it, as too is milk and other staples, including eggs.

The danger of an abundance of potassium leads to heart attacks and other things. The lesson that too much good healthy food can actually kill you has been learnt. The Great Spirit has once again protected me, as it does all who are spiritual. All one needs do is ask it as a friend for answers and it rarely lets you down.

Why Should Gym-Goers Drink Probiotics?

I don't know how many of you know this, but there are many gym goers around the globe, who drink probiotics almost every day. There are several brands that have introduced such drinks, especially for those, who know how good 'friendly bacteria' are for the ones who consume them.

If you are a gym-goer, you must consume healthy 'yeast' regularly, so that you can enjoy the following benefits:

  1. It allows you to go to gym, every day! – I hope you know that healthy bacteria allow you to stay away from minor illnesses. Since you don't fall ill often, you can go to gym often. If you are someone, who has always been going through cold, cough and fever, you are bound to skip your regular workouts. Start with the consumption of probiotics and see the difference in your body.
  2. It helps in keeping you maintained – Research states that probiotics make you lose weight. In fact, if you are someone, who has lost weight, you can maintain it easily with the help of good bacteria. All you need to do is drink it either after your workout or before it. But the consumption needs to be regular to get fruitful results.
  3. There are no side-effects, unless you consume it way too much – Just because good bacteria is 'good enough' for your body doesn't mean that you are supposed to drink too much of it. If you want to enjoy the benefits without getting hampered by the side-effects, have only one small bottle of probiotics.
  4. It keeps you away from acidity – The biggest enemy of a gym-goer is acidity; if someone is acidic, he can't exercise the way he wants to. He can't even increase the consumption of protein. On the other hand, if you drink probiotics every day, you kick off acidity and eat all the protein-containing foodstuffs, like eggs, potatoes, etc., that you really want to.
  5. It acts like a supplement – Most of the gym-goers like probiotics because they act as supplements to maintain the perfect body-weight that they want to. Good bacteria are all that your body needs to help it function the way it should.

If you think only adults can drink probiotics, you are absolutely wrong. No doubt you can't give such drinks to toddlers or infants, but you can always give it to the 'young adults.' It helps in improving their digestive system and keeps them strong enough with an improved and balanced immunity system.

Can A Healthy Lifestyle Help Your Back?

Back pain is the leading cause of disability in the United Kingdom, affecting almost 1 in 10 people. Suffering from back pain can be debilitating and have a significant impact on your work and social life. But did you know that making some simple lifestyle changes can reduce the amount of back pain you experience?

A recent study from researchers in Sweden found that people who lived a healthy lifestyle were much less likely to develop chronic back problems. This article will explain why healthy living can have a positive effect on your back.

What is a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle is living in a way that maximises your health, energy levels and physical capacity. The five main components of healthy living include:

  1. Eating a nutritious diet

Enjoying a healthy and balanced diet ensures that your body has the energy and nutrients it requires to remain healthy.

  2. Exercising regularly

Adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week (half that if exercising at a high intensity). You should also perform some strength training for all major muscle groups each week. This ensures that your muscles, ligaments, bones, and cardiovascular system remain healthy.

  3. Managing your weight

A healthy lifestyle includes staying at a healthy weight through diet and exercise.

  4. Managing your stress levels

Being stressed can have a dramatic impact on your body, increasing your blood sugar levels, causing anxiety, and slowing your metabolism. Finding ways to manage stress is an important part of enjoying a healthy lifestyle.

  5. Getting enough sleep

The body uses sleep to heal the body, regulate hormones, remove toxins, and much more. Sleep is an important part of remaining healthy and happy.

How will living a healthy lifestyle help your back?

Not only will living a healthy lifestyle give you more energy, improve the quality of your life, and help you live longer – it also can help you avoid back pain. Here is how:

Better core strength to support your back

Exercising regularly will ensure that the muscles in the abdomen and lower back are well-developed. Keeping these muscles strong will help to take some strain off your spine and provide it with support. You will be less likely to injure or strain your back and there will be less pressure on it each day.

Better posture

Being active and physically fit will also help you improve your posture. It will become easier to keep your spine straight when sitting, walking and running, which helps you avoid back pain.

Less weight means a healthier back

The United Kingdom is still going through an obesity epidemic with over 62% of adults being overweight or obese. Unfortunately, carrying all of this extra weight can contribute to back pain and change the alignment of your spine. Living a healthy lifestyle helps you avoid obesity and remain in a weight range that is appropriate for your age, gender, and height.

Spending less time sitting down

Sitting down for long periods is one of the major risk factors for back pain and lumbar disorders. Essentially, the more time you spend sitting down, the more likely it is that you will have back pain. Living a healthy lifestyle helps because it is a more active lifestyle. You will spend less time sitting down in front of the computer or television, and more time moving about.

Your spine will have the nutrients it needs

The human spine requires many nutrients to grow new tissue and repair itself including vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Iron, and protein. Eating a healthy and nutritious diet ensures that your spine has all these important nutrients.

Less risk of degenerative spinal injuries

A healthy lifestyle is one that avoids cigarettes and excessive alcohol consumption. This can help you avoid certain illnesses and injuries. For example, researchers have discovered that smoking can increase the risk of degenerative disc disease and lower back pain. Other research has shown that people who drink excessively are more likely to injure their back.

More likely to get professional help

Having a healthy lifestyle makes a person more health conscious and more likely to see a medical professional if something is wrong. This means you won’t hesitate to see a chiropractor or general practitioner if your back hurts – which helps you identify and treat a spinal injury or other back problem before it becomes worse.

Gain Weight by Eating Healthy Food

Being underweight is as destructive as being overweight. Being too skinny may directly affect your work and personality. It can also lead to health issues in the long run. Several medical conditions such as thyroid problems can be responsible for a person being skinny. While some people can be naturally skinny and healthy, it is difficult for some to gain weight easily. It takes several days to gain weight; it is not an overnight job. Slowly and steadily weight can be increased while maintaining a proper health balance.

The most important thing to do in this scenario is to have a better caloric intake. These 5 tips may come handy for those aiming at gaining weight in a healthy way.

1. Intake of maximum proteins: Out of the top tips to gain weight, the most important is eating plenty of proteinous foods. As muscle mass is made out of protein, eating calories in terms of proteins is vital.

Without protein, those extra calories from the food might end up in excess of body fat. High protein foods like legumes and nuts can be helpful. Eating sufficient amounts of proteins can help in gaining muscle weight instead of body fat. A high protein diet thus helps in gaining muscle weight by acting as a building block.

2. Eat carbohydrates and fat: Eating a diet rich in carbohydrates and fat is essential to gain weight. Each meal should consist of proper portions of carbohydrates, fat, and proteins. Your meal intake should be at least 3 times each day. Make sure the food contains energy-dense snacks along with these 3 meals. This ensures plenty of carbohydrates, fat, and proteins. Eating healthy food acts as catalyst for gaining weight.

3. Energy-packed food: Eating energy-packed food is a healthy way to gain weight. These nutritious food items include nuts like Almonds, Walnuts, Peanuts, etc and dried fruits like raisins, etc.

Whole grain food like brown rice and oats are very useful to gain weight in a healthy way. Potatoes and sweet potatoes can be included in the diet, as well. Such a diet is highly filling and hence, split it in appropriate time intervals so that you don’t have to force the food inside you. Squeeze in some extra snacks or meals whenever possible.

4. Regular exercise: Gymming is just one of the ways for you to build muscles and gain weight. If a gym is not suitable, opt for any other kind of exercise regime like Yoga or Zumba. Also, try and play your favourite sport / game whenever possible. This will ensure that the food you eat is properly digested and converted into energy, further building your body strength and muscle.

5. Do not drink water before meals: Drinking water before meals reduces your intake quantity and in-turn hunger. For proper digestion, make sure to drink water 30 minutes after having meals.

Eating the right kind of fat is extremely important. Trans fats should be avoided and healthy fats should be consumed. Underweight individuals often wonder how to gain weight fast! Luckily, the answer is very simple: just eat right portions of the right food at right intervals of time.

Consume organic and fresh food for better results in putting on those extra calories. Make sure to buy organic food from the most authentic organic food supplier, only!

Healthy Eating – Four Reasons to Take Probiotics

If you are someone who is interested in maximizing your health, one thing you might be considering is your intake of probiotics. These healthy bacteria live in the stomach and help keep your immune system strong, promote optimal digestion, and keep your entire body working in proper order.

While everyone needs to be consuming a healthy dose of probiotics on a regular basis, there are particular times when you need to increase your dose.

Let’s take a closer look at the main times when serving yourself a little extra dose of probiotics is a wise move…

1. When You Are Ill. Because probiotics play a vital role in keeping your immune system in top shape, it is important you focus on consuming these probiotics when you are struggling with your health.

If you are currently ill, an extra dose can give you the power your body needs to fend off whatever it is fighting: helping you get back to optimal health. When you have a common cold or the flu, as well as when you are struggling with a health issue, an additional dose could be helpful.

2. After You Have Completed The Prescribed Antibiotics. While you are sick and need antibiotics, they can be useful. What they won’t be good for is your gut health. Antibiotics will kill any harmful bacteria currently residing in your system. However, they will also take out all the “good” bacteria.

Serving yourself an extra dose of probiotics during this time can help bring your gut environment back to optimal, ensuring your immune system stays strong.

3. Before And During Travel. The next time it is a smart move to add a few extra probiotics to your daily menu is before and during travel. Before travel, the goal is to make your immune system as healthy as possible, which will help fend off any viruses present in the area you are going.

During the traveling period, taking the probiotics will help keep your system as healthy as possible, and help you avoid any digestive woes that may occur due to eating foods, not your typical dining choices. If you are all about trying local cuisine when you travel, your taste buds may enjoy this, but your stomach may feel otherwise. Using a probiotic may help prevent unwanted issues from occurring.

4. Throughout Pregnancy. Finally, the last time to make sure a probiotic is present in your life is throughout pregnancy. Keeping your body extra healthy at this point is important, and a good quality probiotic may help to reduce your risk of suffering from birth-related complications such as Gestational diabetes.

As you can see, a probiotic is not something you want to slough off and take lightly. It is a must-have in any diet plan aiming to keep you as healthy as possible.

Tradition, Family Values, & Healthy Living

Family traditions are usually defined as a combination of social ideals, personal attitudes, ideas, and environment derived from your parents or relatives, while family values usually refer to how you frame your personal life in the context of political and social issues. Family traditions include honoring the people and places from which they come from.

Tradition and values can vary from family to family, but what doesn’t change is the effect these traditions and values have on your body, seeing as most traditions include unhealthy meals. You can have it all: tradition, values, and healthy living. It is about living your life in balance or moderation.

You should always eat a balanced diet. Diet extremes harm your body rather than provide balance. Even eating the same foods over and over again are not necessarily good for you on a daily basis. If you have broccoli one day, have string beans another. If you have good, down-home cooking for one meal, make sure that one of your other meals is filled with fiber, whole foods, little sugar and little fat. Life is about many choices. Make your choices wisely.

Weight – You need to find your ideal body weight. Being overweight or underweight can cause health problems. Underweight people usually have a more difficult time fighting off serious diseases like cancer and balancing their immune system. Overweight people often suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems. Genetics can play a major role in your health, and it is possible to live a healthy lifestyle being under-or overweight, but no one can predict if you have won this healthy living lottery. Every person is different; one person who carries extra weight may really suffer, whereas another person who also carries extra weight has no issues at all.

Refined or Fast foods -If you are trying to be healthy, are overweight, or trying to lose weight, and have any kind of health issue, fast or refined food is probably one of the worst things you can eat. Fast food is usually filled with fat, refined sugars, gross amounts of sodium and countless carbohydrates, all of the things that are poison to your immune system. Many desserts, sweets or snacks are loaded with bad carbohydrates, ones high in sugar, saturated fat, and sodium, which can increase your bad cholesterol, blood pressure, harm your heart and can lead to diabetes. However, if you have to have one of your family recipes filled with sugar and fat, try melsLaw: If you eat too much of one kind of food, balance your diet by eating an equal amount of an opposite kind of food until you can eat a proportionately balanced diet. For example, if you are a fast-food junkie, rotate your meals between grains, leafy vegetables and fruits, and fast food, which usually consists of refined foods, fat, salt, and sugar. This is not a perfect diet, but it is a start on your road to healthy living. High-fat foods contain more calories than low-fat foods, fruits, vegetables and grains, and are not as satisfying as the latter.

Exercise. Next to diet, exercise, or physical activity, is critical and probably the most important thing you can do to achieve optimal health and feel better. Nutrition and physical activity are interactive; each influences the other. Exercise and physical activity both involve body movement, muscle contraction and energy release. The difference between exercise and physical activity is that exercise is usually considered to be more strenuous and structured. For our purpose, exercise and physical activity are the same.

Exercise:

o Improves nutritional health

o Reduces stress

o Improves your self-image, outlook and mood – spiritual happiness

o Lowers risks & combats chronic diseases – cancer, diabetes, heart, high cholesterol, hypertension, immune system

o Helps you to manage your weight

o Strengthens your body & improves body composition – helps prevent injuries

o Helps improve your sleep

o Enhances immunity

o Improves quality of life

o Increases your energy and relieves fatigue

o Can be entertaining and fun – exercise with a friend or people-watch while you run

o Increases your life span

o Is free or inexpensive

Blue-collar ethic. Blue-collar ethic usually means working class people performing manual labor, earning an hourly wage, and having a sense of family values. If you are one of these people and you prefer fast food and like to have a beer after work, do so, but only in moderation. (See melsLaw above) If you choose to drink, drink a light beer or have a glass of wine. If you eat fast food every day, make sure one of your meals is very high in fiber and whole grains. Studies have shown that nothing good can come from smoking if you are trying to improve your health. If you smoke, try and cut down slowly with the ultimate goal being to stop smoking.

Religion. Whatever your religious or spiritual beliefs are, treat your body like a place of worship. It is the only one that you have, and you need to take care of it and honor it.

Great Health, Great Life

It’s no secret that being in great health, means you’re living a great life. So being that it’s no surprise, why do some insist on boycotting the healthy life? A healthy lifestyle is the gateway to a happy, satisfying and fulfilled existence. It’s a domino effect: Healthy lifestyle > healthy habits > a happier you. The advantages of having great health are overwhelming (in a good way) so its important to note the benefits of healthy living we may have forgotten about. Let’s take a look:

Energy

One of the biggest benefits of healthy living is the amount of energy you’ll have. When you eat foods rich with vitamins and antioxidants, they provide you with the energy that other bad foods can’t. So when your body isn’t burdened to digest unhealthy foods, you receive an ample amount of energy to do your daily activities and to even exercise. The only setback to eating healthy, is that your body will have to adjust and this adjustment takes time. Don’t worry if you tend to feel a little worse. That’s your body taking advantage of your healthier eating and will start to get rid of the bad stuff. Don’t quit! Stay with it and soon enough you’ll be on your path to the healthy lifestyle you’ve always wanted.

Mood/Feelings

So this really shouldn’t be a secret. When you’re living a healthier lifestyle, you are 100% undoubtedly happier. Your diet has a lot to do with your mood. When you ingest fruits and vegetables, you start getting the vitamins and minerals that your body has been craving. Exercising can also improve your mood. When you know you’re working towards getting healthy and fit, exercising coupled with good eating can really lift your spirits and give you the confidence and motivation necessary to keep trucking. You will feel better about your appearance.

Remember the snickers commercial when they show that you’re not yourself when you’re hungry? Yeah, that’s called hypoglycemia! Foods with less protein may make you feel a bit more hungry, and sometimes you have cravings because your body is asking for something that it feels is missing from your body.

Sleep

Exhibiting healthy habits also leads to a domino effect in the case of sleep. When you’re eating right, exercising daily, and just plain living healthy, you tend to sleep better. You improve your sleep cycle so when you wake up, you feel as refreshed and awake as ever. And we all know how crucial sleep is to our well being. With sleep, you can say goodbye to those bags and dark circles under your eyes and hopefully mitigate that lethargic feeling that most people exhibit when they lack sleep. Remember 6-8 hours a night can really make a difference throughout your day.

But here’s an extra fact: Did you know that models sleep more than 8 hours a night? Yes, its true! Sleep plays a huge role in weight loss. The later people stay up, the more likely they are to eat. Eating after 8pm is probably not in your best interest because your metabolism tends to slow down at that point. That is why it is recommended that you start every morning with a well balanced breakfast so your metabolism can begin doing it’s job early on in the day. And to be honest, going to bed full is not the best feeling. You just feel gross.

Stress

This is a BIG one and also a domino effect. Healthy eating, exercising, an elevated mood, and sleep all help your stress levels. When you’re eating healthy you have energy. When you have energy, you can exercise. When you exercise, you sleep better along with being in a happier mood. When you sleep well in conjunction with a good mood and calmness, you’re instantly less stressed. See? It all has an effect on each other. When your stress levels go down, your health improves, letting the body focus on other things. When you’re less stressed you sleep better, think better, and function better. Who doesn’t want to be able to do all that?

But yes, every once in a while people will “eat their feelings” and for the most part it’s because of stress or anxiety. Food serves as a comfort to their body’s that they may otherwise be lacking elsewhere in their lives. The goal is to fight these addictions especially towards unhealthy foods that cause more harm than good to your body.

Fight Diseases

DUH! This is really a no brainer. When you’re healthier you have a lot less medical issues to worry about. Normal cholesterol levels, blood pressure, arteries, they all become minor (not saying that they shouldn’t be checked regularly). Not to mention that if you do in fact get sick with the something like common cold, you’re more likely to kick it quicker. Eating healthy can decrease your chances of getting heart disease or diabetes or even falling into depression. A lot less to worry about when your health becomes of importance.

Longevity

Also a no brainer. Fact: Smoking takes years off your life. This is something hopefully all of us know. So when you avoid smoking altogether or quit, you’re doing everything you can to increase the duration of your life or put back the years those cigarettes may have taken off. Same goes with food and exercising. Healthier people tend to live longer; also a fact. It’s been reported that The American Council on Exercise concluded that after an 8 year study, 13 million people who walked just 30 minutes a day significantly decreased their chances of dying at an early age.

No one wants to live their late 80’s barely being able to make it out of bed. A big trend in medicine is preventative medicine, the concept of trying to decrease the chances of acquiring cancer or disease. Lets try to enjoy every moment of our retirement and that includes being healthy enough to do what you want!

So it’s easy to see why there shouldn’t be any reason to not live a healthy lifestyle. There are so many benefits that could significantly improve the way we live our lives. Better sleep, happier moods, more energy, those are just a few of the goodies we receive when we crank up the healthy habits. Let’s put ourselves in drive and fire up that motivation that I know we all have inside of us. We’re rooting for you!

Health Care and Health Insurance Costs Can Be Controlled Through Lifestyle Choices

As you probably know all to well, the cost of healthcare and health insurance premiums continue to increase at levels substantially above the general inflation rate. The reasons given for these extraordinary cost increases are numerous and include: technological advancements in the medical field, increased demand for medical services and prescription drugs, the aging of the population, cost shifting caused by the uninsured and governmental reimbursement rates, state and federal mandates, and costs associated with medical related lawsuits.

As individual consumers, we have very little control over some of the factors contributing to the cost of healthcare. However, all of us have control over lifestyle related health insurance claims. A simple formula of eating a balanced diet, getting the appropriate amount of daily exercise, participating in annual physicals and other recommended routine care, limiting alcohol consumption, and eliminating the use of tobacco products will no doubt reduce our personal healthcare costs. In addition to reducing medical costs, the other benefits of following such a formula include more energy, self confidence, less stress, and increased productivity. If you are not doing so already, I encourage you to consider practical ways to promote a healthy lifestyle for you and your family. For example, one of the individual health insurance companies my organization works with has an option that will offset 25% of the annual cost of a health club membership. Simple things such as taking a walk, bike ride, or going swimming promote both a healthy body and mind. If you have a sweet tooth, consider limiting yourself to eating desert once a week. You will enjoy it more and your body will thank you.

Health insurance premiums will continue to increase as long as the cost of healthcare continues to go up. The best way to reduce the overall cost of healthcare is to decrease our need for healthcare. Healthy lifestyle choices and prudent use of the healthcare system are the best and easiest ways to get a handle on our healthcare expenditures. Perhaps the greatest benefit of a healthy lifestyle is our ability to enjoy our precious time here on earth to the fullest.

One of the biggest struggles that moms have with the kids is to getting them eat healthy. This is not a story of a single mom, but almost of all the moms. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it’s the perfect way to say good morning to our body. Breakfast is important for the kids but what they eat in the morning is more crucial. Choosing a healthy Indian breakfast rich in fiber, calcium and other nutrients is highly important. Serve your kids with fruits, green veggies and milk each morning.

A few moms shared their tricks to get their kids to eat healthy Indian breakfast. Let’s discuss their tricks and responses on what works for them. Get inspired with these tricks and try them out for your kids.

• Make it interesting: Getting children to eat green veggies is the biggest challenge. Try out Paranthas stuffed with eggs, methi, paneer and spinach or you can try out dals with greens in them. If your kids don’t like vegetables, try out Chinese style rice with some mix vegetables, sandwiches loaded with veggies and mayonise or try out egg sandwich. These are some ways by which you can make your family eat healthy yet tasty food. You can also talk to your kids regularly about the many benefits of having healthy food.

• Begin early: Feed healthy foods like baigan bartha, palak paneer, Karela, gajar ka halwa etc to your child from an early age for its good health. If you try to start it at young age, they will develop a taste for the vegetables. Try healthy Indian breakfast recipes like moong dal cheela, rava idli, half egg fry with toast etc. Moong dal cheela stuffed with Paneer is one of the nutritious and delightful north Indian breakfast recipes which are liked by children and adults alike.

• Spice it up: Try out spices in normal salads, pranthas and vegetables. Make salads in the form of chaat by adding tomatoes, onion, capsicum, spices and lemon juice just like bhelpuri. Mix grated vegetables and spices in stuffed paranthas.

• Mix-and-match: Make dals in routine with a mix-and-match approach such as mooli dal, lauki dal, karela dal and tomato dal. Adding a different vegetable everyday rescues the regular dal from becoming boring and also the dal will get a unique flavor with each veggie added to it.

• Add wisely: If your children love spring rolls, load them up with some green veggies. In this way, they will get the required nutrition.

• Involve your kids in kitchen: Try to involve your kids in the kitchen as in this way; they will love to have foods with a feeling of ownership. Educate them about the health benefits of each ingredient that you use in dishes. This will help them feel responsible about their own health. Use purees of carrot, lauki, pumpkins and palak in the curries and subzis, so that the required nutrients are included in their diet.

Healthy Living – Managing Ongoing Fatigue

If there is one thing frustrating to just about everyone, it is ongoing fatigue. You feel tired, daily, and nothing you are doing seems to be fixing it. You may have tried medications at this point, only to see no results at all. What gives?

Sometimes, the problem with managing ongoing tiredness is we dial in too much on the fatigue and don’t look at the bigger picture. Let us take a look at some of the reasons you may be suffering from exhaustion and what can be done to help. Keep in mind everyone is unique, so you need to learn about your body and look at your lifestyle as a whole…

1. Stress. Perhaps the main reason for fatigue, apart from the lack of sleep, is a high level of stress. The thing with anxiety is unless you are hyper-aware of your body and thoughts, you might not realize you are stressed. You are going about your day, minding your own business, thinking things are fabulous. You don’t feel stressed?

However, stress could be lingering. Ask yourself, is there anything you are worried about? Once you start thinking about it, you might find there is. While you may forget about the problem during the day as you become busy, the problem is still there in the background.

Being busy is a cause of stress for many people. When was the last time you had a day with nothing on the agenda? Where could you go around, doing whatever you pleased at that very moment? Can’t remember? You are not alone. Being too busy can lead to stress. It is not the same form of pressure you would feel if you lost your job unexpectedly, but it is stress nonetheless.

2. Thyroid Disorder. When was the last time you had your thyroid checked? If it has been a while since you have had blood tests, this is one of the first areas to have checked.

If you have hypothyroidism, this will lead to tiredness and stress. Usually, if you see your doctor complaining of fatigue, they will check your thyroid. However, if your doctor doesn’t suggest this, be sure you request your thyroid levels are monitored.

3. Too Much Exercise. Are you someone excited about your workout program? Despite feeling tired, you push yourself daily because you know it is “good for you?”

Your workout could be causing your extreme tiredness. It is easy to overlook this because exercise does energize you and even in your state of exhaustion, you may feel better after a workout. However, this is the endorphins: once they wear off, you will be left more tired.

Rest days are crucial in any workout program. If you are not taking enough rest days, fatigue will be the price you pay. Please have a good look at your plan and make sure rest days are scheduled.

4. Lack Of B Vitamins. Finally, also consider B vitamins. B vitamins are essential for helping turn the food you eat into usable energy, so you don’t want to fall low on these. B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning you need to take them daily otherwise they will be excreted from your body leaving your levels low and ineffective.

If you are not eating a varied diet which is found in fresh produce and meat, then consider a vitamin C complex supplement. It may just make a difference to how you feel.

Keep these points in mind and use them as you evaluate what could be happening in your life causing you to feel fatigued. The sooner you can get it straightened out, the quicker you will be leading the life you want.

Healthy Recipes For Kids

How about healthy recipes for kids, ones they will enjoy? Kids cringe at the thought of "healthy food." Let's face it, so do most adults. But it is not as hard as you think to create healthy, raw food meals that everyone will love. If proper nutrition is started at an early age, children grow up enjoying healthy food.

When we eat healthy raw foods, several things happen. First of all, we have more energy. And because we're eating foods in their natural state we're receiving all the natural goodness nature intended in the form of vitamins, mineral, antioxidants, phytonutrients, enzymes and many yet to be discovered nutrients. Research shows that these natural components provide a strong foundation for good health and may help prevent serious disease as well. The fiber in these foods will help to keep your colon on a more regular schedule which is critical to good health no matter what your age is.

Great healthy recipes for kids contain a variety of raw foods. Raw foods are a great start to any diet plan, especially for kids because they need healthy materials for building healthy bodies. Things like bananas, grapes, apples, sweet red peppers, cucumbers, strawberries, carrots, corn, raspberries, blueberries, avocados, mangos, pomegranates, tomatoes, and just about anything that you would find in the produce section. Spinach and broccoli too … okay, kids might not like those two right away, but you can add them to a smoothie and they need not know.

If you want to create tasty healthy recipes for kids how about getting your kids involved in meal planning. Let them add the things that they like to a salad, the main course, or even dessert. Let's say you give everyone some lettuce or other leafy green and let the kids build their own salad from the variety of other foods in bowls on the table. There are lots of organic raw foods that can be added to the salad. Apple pieces, mandarin sections, celery, walnuts, hemp seeds, fennel, tomatoes, shredded carrots, raisins, peas … the list is endless, just get creative. And as we know a large healthy salad can be a complete meal.

Children are growing and need fats from healthy sources to build better bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids are an excellent source of nutrition which are notably missing from the standard American diet. Foods like walnuts, hemp seeds, ground flax seed and chia seed are great sources of omega 3's. One of these fats blended with orange juice and a few herbs or spices gives you a very healthy salad dressing.

There are lots of things that you can create with fresh fruit that will get your little one excited. A really great breakfast meal, or any meal for that matter is a large green smoothie. Add fruits and greens to the blender with a table spoon of flax or chia seed and let it rip. Kids will love helping with this as well. It's tasty and very healthy, fruit for energy, greens for minerals, and seeds fulfilling the body's needs for healthy fats.

When planning healthy recipes for kids think of these words: fresh, whole, ripe, organic, and raw as the golden words for creating healthy meals and kids. Oh, and add one more, variety. Consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables is important for maintaining good health. So let's review, involve the kids in meal planning and preparation, be creative, and let nature take its course.

Type 2 Diabetes and Healthy Living – Why You Need to Invest In Your Health Every Day

Health advice is all around for a good reason. People are pushing their ideas because there is a demand for it. It is more than just interesting material to many people; often it is crucial information we all need to be made aware of.

Your health and well-being become a more relevant issue with each passing day. Nobody is getting any younger, and few of us are preparing for being older. You need to invest in your health every single day. A little goes a long way, especially when you consider the benefits you will gain and the health problems you will prevent.

It is not just about feeling better, being at the right weight, and having the freedom to eat whatever foods you like as opposed to being shackled by hypertension and Type 2 diabetes and their issues and inconveniences. It is about preventing what can…

  • put you in a hospital bed,
  • demand an emergency procedure, and potentially bring about an early death.

First, it starts with your weight. The majority of health problems affecting adults these days has to do with excess body fat. You may think it is trivial to consider as you only put on a “couple” of pounds in a year. The difference this makes may appear to be insignificant. However, at this pace, ten years causes quite a bit of damage. Poor nutrition and an inactive lifestyle add insult to injury.

Consider for the second half of this timeline you have elevated blood sugar, which may be due to prediabetes or perhaps your issue has progressed on to Type 2 diabetes. Now that is a lot of years of damage to your body. You are not getting any younger, and by neglecting your health in this manner, would also mean you will not enjoy good health in later life.

What has been mentioned above is an example, and only some of it may apply to you. Nevertheless, the principle remains. Will you take care of your well-being from today? You need to invest in your health, because if you don’t, you may pay for it dearly…

  • your kidneys,
  • your liver,
  • your heart, even
  • your brain could suffer through a stroke or dementia.

Taking care of your health one day at a time will add up. Even a small detail like…

  • taking the stairs at work instead of riding the elevator or escalator whenever you step outside your office or workplace,
  • skipping your afternoon snack,
  • parking your car towards the back of the car park at the shopping center and walking to the shops instead of parking close to the entrance, and
  • cooking your dinner instead of eating processed food

will make a difference. You can count on it.
