Family traditions are usually defined as a combination of social ideals, personal attitudes, ideas, and environment derived from your parents or relatives, while family values usually refer to how you frame your personal life in the context of political and social issues. Family traditions include honoring the people and places from which they come from.

Tradition and values can vary from family to family, but what doesn’t change is the effect these traditions and values have on your body, seeing as most traditions include unhealthy meals. You can have it all: tradition, values, and healthy living. It is about living your life in balance or moderation.

You should always eat a balanced diet. Diet extremes harm your body rather than provide balance. Even eating the same foods over and over again are not necessarily good for you on a daily basis. If you have broccoli one day, have string beans another. If you have good, down-home cooking for one meal, make sure that one of your other meals is filled with fiber, whole foods, little sugar and little fat. Life is about many choices. Make your choices wisely.

Weight – You need to find your ideal body weight. Being overweight or underweight can cause health problems. Underweight people usually have a more difficult time fighting off serious diseases like cancer and balancing their immune system. Overweight people often suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems. Genetics can play a major role in your health, and it is possible to live a healthy lifestyle being under-or overweight, but no one can predict if you have won this healthy living lottery. Every person is different; one person who carries extra weight may really suffer, whereas another person who also carries extra weight has no issues at all.

Refined or Fast foods -If you are trying to be healthy, are overweight, or trying to lose weight, and have any kind of health issue, fast or refined food is probably one of the worst things you can eat. Fast food is usually filled with fat, refined sugars, gross amounts of sodium and countless carbohydrates, all of the things that are poison to your immune system. Many desserts, sweets or snacks are loaded with bad carbohydrates, ones high in sugar, saturated fat, and sodium, which can increase your bad cholesterol, blood pressure, harm your heart and can lead to diabetes. Blue-collar ethic. Blue-collar ethic usually means working class people performing manual labor, earning an hourly wage, and having a sense of family values. If you are one of these people and you prefer fast food and like to have a beer after work, do so, but only in moderation. (See melsLaw above) If you choose to drink, drink a light beer or have a glass of wine. If you eat fast food every day, make sure one of your meals is very high in fiber and whole grains. Studies have shown that nothing good can come from smoking if you are trying to improve your health. If you smoke, try and cut down slowly with the ultimate goal being to stop smoking.

Religion. Whatever your religious or spiritual beliefs are, treat your body like a place of worship. It is the only one that you have, and you need to take care of it and honor it.

If there is one thing frustrating to just about everyone, it is ongoing fatigue. You feel tired, daily, and nothing you are doing seems to be fixing it. You may have tried medications at this point, only to see no results at all. What gives?

Sometimes, the problem with managing ongoing tiredness is we dial in too much on the fatigue and don’t look at the bigger picture. Let us take a look at some of the reasons you may be suffering from exhaustion and what can be done to help. Keep in mind everyone is unique, so you need to learn about your body and look at your lifestyle as a whole…

1. Stress. Perhaps the main reason for fatigue, apart from the lack of sleep, is a high level of stress. The thing with anxiety is unless you are hyper-aware of your body and thoughts, you might not realize you are stressed. You are going about your day, minding your own business, thinking things are fabulous. You don’t feel stressed?

However, stress could be lingering. Ask yourself, is there anything you are worried about? Once you start thinking about it, you might find there is. While you may forget about the problem during the day as you become busy, the problem is still there in the background.

Being busy is a cause of stress for many people. When was the last time you had a day with nothing on the agenda? Where could you go around, doing whatever you pleased at that very moment? Can’t remember? You are not alone. Being too busy can lead to stress. It is not the same form of pressure you would feel if you lost your job unexpectedly, but it is stress nonetheless.

2. Thyroid Disorder. When was the last time you had your thyroid checked? If it has been a while since you have had blood tests, this is one of the first areas to have checked.

If you have hypothyroidism, this will lead to tiredness and stress. Usually, if you see your doctor complaining of fatigue, they will check your thyroid. However, if your doctor doesn’t suggest this, be sure you request your thyroid levels are monitored.

3. Too Much Exercise. Are you someone excited about your workout program? Despite feeling tired, you push yourself daily because you know it is “good for you?”

Your workout could be causing your extreme tiredness. It is easy to overlook this because exercise does energize you and even in your state of exhaustion, you may feel better after a workout. However, this is the endorphins: once they wear off, you will be left more tired.

Rest days are crucial in any workout program. If you are not taking enough rest days, fatigue will be the price you pay. Please have a good look at your plan and make sure rest days are scheduled.

4. Lack Of B Vitamins. Finally, also consider B vitamins. B vitamins are essential for helping turn the food you eat into usable energy, so you don’t want to fall low on these. B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning you need to take them daily otherwise they will be excreted from your body leaving your levels low and ineffective.

If you are not eating a varied diet which is found in fresh produce and meat, then consider a vitamin C complex supplement. It may just make a difference to how you feel.

Keep these points in mind and use them as you evaluate what could be happening in your life causing you to feel fatigued. The sooner you can get it straightened out, the quicker you will be leading the life you want.

What you need:

  • 8 eggs
  • 4 large carrots, peeled and grated

You Don’t Need Food Supplements to Stay Healthy

Are you taking food supplements? Why?

If you answer “To stay healthy,” then you are off the mark.

I take Kirkland’s Mature Multi because my daughter insists that I should (and pays for it, too). Otherwise, I would go with Dr. Donald McCormick, Ph.D. and Emory University professor emeritus of biochemistry who said, “A lot of money is wasted in providing unnecessary supplements to millions of people who don’t need them.”

This is after Emory University’s study showing that practically half of people 65 and above are taking supplements aside from the daily nutrition they get from the food they eat.

If you are one of them, it is about time you re-think your strategy of staying healthy. You can still achieve your goal supplement free through these.

1. Eat healthily:

Your body goes through drastic changes as you age. One of these is the slowing down of your metabolism. It means your body could no longer digest food as fast as it used to.

To remedy this situation, you must eat more easily digestible foods so they can be transformed into useful energy your body needs.

Doing otherwise will result in the pile up of undigested food which will lodge somewhere, i.e., face, arms, legs waist, as ugly fats.

To eat healthily, consult your doctor or nutritionist on what should go you’re your diet.

o Fruits:

They are heavy in sugars as well as vitamins and nutrients.

Citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, and limes are high in Vitamin C, while dark fruits like berries, pomegranates, and cherries are high in anti-oxidants.

o Grains and Beans:

Grains and beans are high in fibers which are very important especially if you have digestive system problems.

They help prevent irregular bowel movements that could develop into unhealthy complications, like colon cancer.

2. Drink lots of water:

Old age also decreases your body’s water-carrying capacity making you prone to dehydration – one of the major causes of emergency admittance among seniors. It is associated with high mortality rates among the age group.

Avoid dehydration by drinking at least eight, 8-oz glasses of water daily (about 3 liters) a day.

Soda, coffee, or tea is no substitute for water as they can affect your body one way of the other. Even herbal tea cannot substitute water.

Should you feel like taking fruit juice, make your own, not any of those you get from the grocery which is full of sugar and other preservatives.

3. Exercise:

According to WebMD, only one in four seniors, aged between 65 and 74 exercise regularly for a variety of reasons like they are too old, or out of shape, or just plain lazy to stretch their muscles.

Exercise is always good regardless of age. It is a necessity as you age.

It makes you feel stronger, happier and more enthusiastic about life. It also prevents loss of bone density, improves balance and coordination, boosts your memory, and minimizes the occurrence of chronic conditions, like asthma.

Pick a less vigorous exercise routine to avoid over-exertion. For example, 30 min/per day of brisk walking, biking or tai-chi is good enough to flex your muscles and joints and strengthen your cardiovascular system.

4. Get enough sleep:

There is no standard number of hours per night, but six to seven hours of uninterrupted sleep at night will be good for you.

It is enough to give your body and mind that much-needed rest; it rejuvenates you and primes you up for next day’s activities.

Take mid-day naps as well. They have been proven beneficial for seniors like you.

5. Find a balance between mind, body, and soul:

We are all made up of body, mind, and soul. They are inseparable. They go where you go, and do what you do. And you must give each their fair share of attention and care.

You can do that by eating healthy, living healthy and thinking healthy.

You cannot favor one over the other without offsetting your inner balance. Without balance, you will suffer from any of the physical and mental changes that come with aging.

According to Leanne Beattie, 15 to 50% of seniors are suffering either from poor nutrition or malnutrition, while others are having sedentary lifestyles.

Together they contribute to the health and wellness problems among people 65 and above and consume third of their monthly budgets.

It doesn’t have to be that way. As a retiree, you are supposed to be enjoying life not spending your time with your doctors and your money on expensive drugs for your medical conditions.
