Paying attention to what we eat is one of the most important and simple things we can do to improve our health. The people in most advanced civilizations have been exposed to highly processed foods for several generations.

During this processing of our food, many of the nutritional benefits of the food are processed out. Natural healthy food is alive. The living tissue begins to rot as soon as it is separated from its roots. During processing, manufactures take many of the nutrients out of the food to slow down this rotting process, so the food will last longer on store shelves.

The problem is those nutrients are essential components of a healthy diet.

Eating organic whole food, as much as possible, is a very basic component of living healthy. I'm not fanatical about this. I am just gradually eating more organic whole food and less processed food.

Fruit, nuts, vegetables and whole grain are the most natural ingredients of a healthy diet for human beings. Eating lean meat is ok, but it takes way more resources to produce meat and then our bodies use more energy to digest it.

I've always figured that human beings are omnivorous. Have been since we diverged from our nearest relatives in the animal kingdom 8 million years ago or so. Then some one pointed out that human teeth are not carnivore type teeth, and I have to admit that he has a good point.

There is also the well known fact that meat production is a very inefficient way to produce food. And I've witnessed with my own eyes some of the inhumane treatment of livestock in commercial agriculture.

I am not opposed to eating meat. I am opposed to allowing people to imprison animals in cages and corrals where they can't move and they are forced to live in their own sewer.

I'm not opposed to genetic modification of food either, however, transforming our food into a pesticide by inserting pesticides into the DNA of the food seems retarded. Creating drought resistant breeds of crops by genetic modification seems reasonable.

The issue of organic food is a bit more complicated. I agree that eating organic food is probably most healthy, however, the benefits of the green revolution are undeniable. The use of fertilizer and pesticides has enabled us to increase our food production and decrease hunger worldwide.

The trend toward monoculture is also troubling. Raising only a few varieties of crops increases the possibility of famine, because that one species of grain can be wiped out by pests or other diseases. A diverse assortment of food crops is more sustainable than the monoculture practiced in modern commercial agriculture.

I am also in favor of organizing the agricultural foundation of our economy in favor of family farming. I admit that industrial scale agribusiness has some advantages, however, in my opinion, the costs are far greater than the benefits. Our civilization must be grounded on the earth from which we evolve, not the stores in which we shop.

We need a World Health Organization or some other agency that will regulate such issues in a way that benefits all the world people, not just the companies that are producing the food and drugs.

I encourage everyone to pay attention to what we eat. I do not recommend being fanatical about anything. I do recommend eating mostly fruit, nuts, vegetables and whole grain. I suggest we proceed with caution, take the middle way, organize our agriculture and food production in ways and means that are best for all human beings everywhere.

I also often take food supplements, like vitamins and minerals. Since many of the nutrients are processed out of our food, I figure adding supplements is helpful. Even though the supplements are artificially manufactured. Supplying our bodies with an abundance of resources is a good idea. Each person should be conscious and aware of the unique properties of our physical being, as well as our intellectual and spiritual being. Live holistically.

Be sure to have stock in your car or in their bag if you’re going to be out the whole day to prevent from resorting to fast food.

Introduce healthy food slowly

One important thing to keep in mind is that children, by nature, are reluctant to try new food, especially if they haven’t seen or tasted anything like it before. You can explain to them that oftentimes, one would need to get used to a food’s flavour first before they end up liking it.

You can also try serving green peas, for example, in different ways just to make them familiar with it. The first few times they might not try it, but once they see it often on the dinner table, they might be willing to get a taste especially if they see you and everyone else enjoying it.

Be a good example

Children love to mimic their parents and the adults around them. The same goes around the dinner table. If you set an example by eating healthy, nutritious food all the time, they’ll definitely think it’s the norm. If you must have your junk food or your fast food, consider eating those without your child/children seeing.

It’s not that they can’t have fast food or sweets, it’s just that during this time that you’re trying to make them eat healthier, it’s crucial to surround them with just the food that you want them to start eating.

While undergoing through this process, it’s important to remember that children shouldn’t be deprived of their favorite foods. If they want hotdogs, give them some from time to time to make sure they’re still eating!

Increasing your consumption of whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, will actually make your food selections in general much simpler. If the foods you are chosing contain more than 5 ingredients and include a lot of unfamiliar, unpronounceable items, you may want to reconsider buying them. Counting calories, carbs, or fat grams won’t be as necessary when you select foods that are more a product of nature than a product of industry. Finding healthy foods to eat at the grocery store is pretty simple. They are found in the “fresh food” sections like the produce and refrigerated meat and fish departments. The frozen and dry aisles also contain good healthy foods, although there are many unhealthy distractions there as well.

Healthy foods you should have available at home to cook with include whole foods (food in its most natural state), fruits and vegetables, dairy products (low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese and eggs), seafood, lean cuts of pork, beef and chicken, naturally sweetened whole juices and lots of water.

What Do Alpacas Eat?

Eighty percent (80%) of the alpaca and llama diet should be quality pasture grass and/or hay. Alpaca and llama diets vary by different regions in North America, depending on pasture grasses, available supplements, and breeder preferences. The remaining twenty percent (20%) of the diet should be supplemental pellets, minerals, and probiotics.

The Camelid Stomach

Alpacas and llamas have three stomachs. The first stomach is a big “fermentation vat” for all the hay and grass that they eat. The second and third stomachs extract the nutritional components from their food intake. So to keep your alpacas and llamas healthy, you must keep the first stomach, the fermentation vat, in a good, steady, working state.

Pasture Grass and Hay

Your pasture grass or hay should be about twelve percent (12%) protein. You can contact your county agriculture extension office for information on how and where to test your pasture grass. Typically a grass or hay analysis will cost about $15 to $20 US. If you are buying hay, get “horse quality” hay. You’ll need about one square 70 lb bale per animal per week, plus another ten percent (10%) hay for contingency. For example, if some females come to your ranch for breeding. If you need to feed hay to 6 adult alpacas for 16 weeks, your would buy (6*16) = 96 plus 0.10 * 96 = 9.6, or 106 bales.

The hay that you buy should not be moldy. Do not let the hay deliverer unload any hay from his truck until you have done a “smell test” on several bales. It should have a sweet grass smell. If it smells moldy, it is moldy. So don’t buy bad grass.

Regular Meal Schedule

It doesn’t matter what time of the day you feed your alpacas supplemental pellets, provided that you feed them at a regular time each day. This helps to keep their first stomach in good working order.

The alpaca stomach generates a lot of heat. So you can change the feeding schedule to be best timed with the year’s season. For example, if you live in a very hot summer climate, you might feed them in the evening, rather than the day, to avoid generating unnecessary body heat during the hot part of the afternoon.

Feeding Supplemental Pellets

Many alpaca owners are feeding far too many supplemental pellets. Their is a relationship between how much an alpacas eats and the production of fine or coarse fiber. Overfeeding alpacas and produces coarse fiber! While we don’t want to starve our animals to produce fine fiber, the goal is to feed then efficiently.

There are different brands of quality alpaca pellets, which usually come in 40 to 50 lb. bags. A pellet with about fifteen percent (15%) protein is recommended. Each bag has an end label that gives the nutritional values, amount of pellets for males, non-pregnant females, pregnant and lactating females, and crias (babies). Typically, pregnant and lactating females should get 1 lb of pellets per day. Males and non-pregnant females should get 1/2 lb a day, and crias should get 1/4 to 1/3 lb of pellets per day.

In winter, when no pasture grass is available and the alpacas are eating hay, I increase the amount of daily pellets by about fifteen percent. In Summer in my area (East Texas), I cut way back on daily pellets because the animals have access to an abundance of pasture grass. Moreover it is so hot that the animals don’t go in the hot sun to eat. Rather they sit before fans all day. So they are not moving around very much, and therefore not burning as many calories. They need less food in Summer.

Alfalfa

I also mix alfalfa with my pellets for certain animals, at certain times. However, you want to be careful with overfeeding alfalfa. Too much alfalfa interferes with balance of available calcium and potassium in an animal’s system. I typically feed 5 parts pellets to 1 part alfalfa for my pregnant females. Males only get alfalfa in the winter.

Other Supplements

Other food supplements include minerals and probiotics. Alpacas and llamas need selenium and other minerals that are not available in some North American soils. Minerals come in the form of loose granules and as compressed blocks. I have found that mineral blocks are significantly less expensive than loose granules. When you buy mineral block, do not buy salt blocks. You probably will not find mineral blocks that are made specifically for alpacas and llamas. So buy either the equine or goat mineral blocks.

Probiotics are another important food supplement. Probiotics have micro-organisms that help the alpaca’s first stomach break down the tough cellulose in hay and grass. There are two categories of probiotics: those based on lactobacillus, and those based on brewers years. Both are excellent. If you see that an alpaca has diarrhea, probiotics help get its digestive system back to normal. You can sprinkle about one teaspoon of probiotics over the daily pellets for several days. I always offer probiotics to my alpacas and llamas after administering oral worming medication.

The fact that you are all sitting down together for a meal rather than picking a quick snack on the way to somewhere else will make meal times more of an occasion. 2. Avoid frozen or canned food – I know these products make life easier. I know you don’t have a lot of time to cook. What can I say? I think your health is worth the extra time and effort, don’t you?

The facts are that fresh food, generally, is better for you than preserved or frozen food. It is simply less refined. Buying your food fresh usually means that it’s richer in nutrients, lower in chemicals, and overall better for you.

3. Drink it plain – What you drink is just as important to your health as what you eat. You need to make sure that you’re not drinking your calories and chemicals without even knowing about them.

A good rule of thumb to go by is to drink plain beverages. The plainer the better. Water is at the top of the list, followed by tea or black sugar and freshly squeezed juices (though these may be high in calories). Sodas, designer coffees, sugar rich drinks, and energy drinks, often contain too much sugar, artificial sweeteners, or calories for your own good. So stick to plain drinks.
