Family traditions are usually defined as a combination of social ideals, personal attitudes, ideas, and environment derived from your parents or relatives, while family values usually refer to how you frame your personal life in the context of political and social issues. Family traditions include honoring the people and places from which they come from.

Tradition and values can vary from family to family, but what doesn’t change is the effect these traditions and values have on your body, seeing as most traditions include unhealthy meals. You can have it all: tradition, values, and healthy living. It is about living your life in balance or moderation.

You should always eat a balanced diet. Diet extremes harm your body rather than provide balance. Even eating the same foods over and over again are not necessarily good for you on a daily basis. If you have broccoli one day, have string beans another. If you have good, down-home cooking for one meal, make sure that one of your other meals is filled with fiber, whole foods, little sugar and little fat. Life is about many choices. Make your choices wisely.

Weight – You need to find your ideal body weight. Being overweight or underweight can cause health problems. Underweight people usually have a more difficult time fighting off serious diseases like cancer and balancing their immune system. Overweight people often suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes or heart problems. Genetics can play a major role in your health, and it is possible to live a healthy lifestyle being under-or overweight, but no one can predict if you have won this healthy living lottery. Every person is different; one person who carries extra weight may really suffer, whereas another person who also carries extra weight has no issues at all.

Refined or Fast foods -If you are trying to be healthy, are overweight, or trying to lose weight, and have any kind of health issue, fast or refined food is probably one of the worst things you can eat. Fast food is usually filled with fat, refined sugars, gross amounts of sodium and countless carbohydrates, all of the things that are poison to your immune system. Many desserts, sweets or snacks are loaded with bad carbohydrates, ones high in sugar, saturated fat, and sodium, which can increase your bad cholesterol, blood pressure, harm your heart and can lead to diabetes. Blue-collar ethic. Blue-collar ethic usually means working class people performing manual labor, earning an hourly wage, and having a sense of family values. If you are one of these people and you prefer fast food and like to have a beer after work, do so, but only in moderation. (See melsLaw above) If you choose to drink, drink a light beer or have a glass of wine. If you eat fast food every day, make sure one of your meals is very high in fiber and whole grains. Studies have shown that nothing good can come from smoking if you are trying to improve your health. If you smoke, try and cut down slowly with the ultimate goal being to stop smoking.

Religion. Whatever your religious or spiritual beliefs are, treat your body like a place of worship. It is the only one that you have, and you need to take care of it and honor it.

It’s no secret that being in great health, means you’re living a great life. So being that it’s no surprise, why do some insist on boycotting the healthy life? A healthy lifestyle is the gateway to a happy, satisfying and fulfilled existence. It’s a domino effect: Healthy lifestyle > healthy habits > a happier you. The advantages of having great health are overwhelming (in a good way) so its important to note the benefits of healthy living we may have forgotten about. Let’s take a look:

Energy

One of the biggest benefits of healthy living is the amount of energy you’ll have. When you eat foods rich with vitamins and antioxidants, they provide you with the energy that other bad foods can’t. So when your body isn’t burdened to digest unhealthy foods, you receive an ample amount of energy to do your daily activities and to even exercise. The only setback to eating healthy, is that your body will have to adjust and this adjustment takes time. Don’t worry if you tend to feel a little worse. That’s your body taking advantage of your healthier eating and will start to get rid of the bad stuff. Don’t quit! Stay with it and soon enough you’ll be on your path to the healthy lifestyle you’ve always wanted.

Mood/Feelings

So this really shouldn’t be a secret. When you’re living a healthier lifestyle, you are 100% undoubtedly happier. Your diet has a lot to do with your mood. When you ingest fruits and vegetables, you start getting the vitamins and minerals that your body has been craving. Exercising can also improve your mood. When you know you’re working towards getting healthy and fit, exercising coupled with good eating can really lift your spirits and give you the confidence and motivation necessary to keep trucking. You will feel better about your appearance.

Remember the snickers commercial when they show that you’re not yourself when you’re hungry? Yeah, that’s called hypoglycemia! Foods with less protein may make you feel a bit more hungry, and sometimes you have cravings because your body is asking for something that it feels is missing from your body.

Sleep

Exhibiting healthy habits also leads to a domino effect in the case of sleep. When you’re eating right, exercising daily, and just plain living healthy, you tend to sleep better. You improve your sleep cycle so when you wake up, you feel as refreshed and awake as ever. And we all know how crucial sleep is to our well being. With sleep, you can say goodbye to those bags and dark circles under your eyes and hopefully mitigate that lethargic feeling that most people exhibit when they lack sleep. Remember 6-8 hours a night can really make a difference throughout your day.

But here’s an extra fact: Did you know that models sleep more than 8 hours a night? Yes, its true! Sleep plays a huge role in weight loss. The later people stay up, the more likely they are to eat. Eating after 8pm is probably not in your best interest because your metabolism tends to slow down at that point. That is why it is recommended that you start every morning with a well balanced breakfast so your metabolism can begin doing it’s job early on in the day. And to be honest, going to bed full is not the best feeling. You just feel gross.

Stress

This is a BIG one and also a domino effect. Healthy eating, exercising, an elevated mood, and sleep all help your stress levels. When you’re eating healthy you have energy. When you have energy, you can exercise. When you exercise, you sleep better along with being in a happier mood. When you sleep well in conjunction with a good mood and calmness, you’re instantly less stressed. See? It all has an effect on each other. When your stress levels go down, your health improves, letting the body focus on other things. When you’re less stressed you sleep better, think better, and function better. Who doesn’t want to be able to do all that?

But yes, every once in a while people will “eat their feelings” and for the most part it’s because of stress or anxiety. Food serves as a comfort to their body’s that they may otherwise be lacking elsewhere in their lives. The goal is to fight these addictions especially towards unhealthy foods that cause more harm than good to your body.

Fight Diseases

DUH! This is really a no brainer. When you’re healthier you have a lot less medical issues to worry about. Normal cholesterol levels, blood pressure, arteries, they all become minor (not saying that they shouldn’t be checked regularly). Not to mention that if you do in fact get sick with the something like common cold, you’re more likely to kick it quicker. Eating healthy can decrease your chances of getting heart disease or diabetes or even falling into depression. A lot less to worry about when your health becomes of importance.

Longevity

Also a no brainer. Fact: Smoking takes years off your life. This is something hopefully all of us know. So when you avoid smoking altogether or quit, you’re doing everything you can to increase the duration of your life or put back the years those cigarettes may have taken off. Same goes with food and exercising. Healthier people tend to live longer; also a fact. It’s been reported that The American Council on Exercise concluded that after an 8 year study, 13 million people who walked just 30 minutes a day significantly decreased their chances of dying at an early age.

No one wants to live their late 80’s barely being able to make it out of bed. A big trend in medicine is preventative medicine, the concept of trying to decrease the chances of acquiring cancer or disease. Lets try to enjoy every moment of our retirement and that includes being healthy enough to do what you want!

So it’s easy to see why there shouldn’t be any reason to not live a healthy lifestyle. There are so many benefits that could significantly improve the way we live our lives. Better sleep, happier moods, more energy, those are just a few of the goodies we receive when we crank up the healthy habits. As you probably know all to well, the cost of healthcare and health insurance premiums continue to increase at levels substantially above the general inflation rate. The reasons given for these extraordinary cost increases are numerous and include: technological advancements in the medical field, increased demand for medical services and prescription drugs, the aging of the population, cost shifting caused by the uninsured and governmental reimbursement rates, state and federal mandates, and costs associated with medical related lawsuits.

A simple formula of eating a balanced diet, getting the appropriate amount of daily exercise, participating in annual physicals and other recommended routine care, limiting alcohol consumption, and eliminating the use of tobacco products will no doubt reduce our personal healthcare costs. In addition to reducing medical costs, the other benefits of following such a formula include more energy, self confidence, less stress, and increased productivity. If you are not doing so already, I encourage you to consider practical ways to promote a healthy lifestyle for you and your family. For example, one of the individual health insurance companies my organization works with has an option that will offset 25% of the annual cost of a health club membership. Simple things such as taking a walk, bike ride, or going swimming promote both a healthy body and mind. If you have a sweet tooth, consider limiting yourself to eating desert once a week. You will enjoy it more and your body will thank you.

Health insurance premiums will continue to increase as long as the cost of healthcare continues to go up. The best way to reduce the overall cost of healthcare is to decrease our need for healthcare. Healthy lifestyle choices and prudent use of the healthcare system are the best and easiest ways to get a handle on our healthcare expenditures. Perhaps the greatest benefit of a healthy lifestyle is our ability to enjoy our precious time here on earth to the fullest.

Healthy Living – Managing Ongoing Fatigue

If there is one thing frustrating to just about everyone, it is ongoing fatigue. You feel tired, daily, and nothing you are doing seems to be fixing it. You may have tried medications at this point, only to see no results at all. What gives?

Sometimes, the problem with managing ongoing tiredness is we dial in too much on the fatigue and don’t look at the bigger picture. Let us take a look at some of the reasons you may be suffering from exhaustion and what can be done to help. Keep in mind everyone is unique, so you need to learn about your body and look at your lifestyle as a whole…

1. Stress. Perhaps the main reason for fatigue, apart from the lack of sleep, is a high level of stress. The thing with anxiety is unless you are hyper-aware of your body and thoughts, you might not realize you are stressed. You are going about your day, minding your own business, thinking things are fabulous. You don’t feel stressed?

However, stress could be lingering. Ask yourself, is there anything you are worried about? Once you start thinking about it, you might find there is. While you may forget about the problem during the day as you become busy, the problem is still there in the background.

Being busy is a cause of stress for many people. When was the last time you had a day with nothing on the agenda? Where could you go around, doing whatever you pleased at that very moment? Can’t remember? You are not alone. Being too busy can lead to stress. It is not the same form of pressure you would feel if you lost your job unexpectedly, but it is stress nonetheless.

2. Thyroid Disorder. When was the last time you had your thyroid checked? If it has been a while since you have had blood tests, this is one of the first areas to have checked.

If you have hypothyroidism, this will lead to tiredness and stress. Usually, if you see your doctor complaining of fatigue, they will check your thyroid. However, if your doctor doesn’t suggest this, be sure you request your thyroid levels are monitored.

3. Too Much Exercise. Are you someone excited about your workout program? Despite feeling tired, you push yourself daily because you know it is “good for you?”

Your workout could be causing your extreme tiredness. It is easy to overlook this because exercise does energize you and even in your state of exhaustion, you may feel better after a workout. However, this is the endorphins: once they wear off, you will be left more tired.

Rest days are crucial in any workout program. If you are not taking enough rest days, fatigue will be the price you pay. Please have a good look at your plan and make sure rest days are scheduled.

4. Lack Of B Vitamins. Finally, also consider B vitamins. B vitamins are essential for helping turn the food you eat into usable energy, so you don’t want to fall low on these. B vitamins are water-soluble, meaning you need to take them daily otherwise they will be excreted from your body leaving your levels low and ineffective.

If you are not eating a varied diet which is found in fresh produce and meat, then consider a vitamin C complex supplement. It may just make a difference to how you feel.

Keep these points in mind and use them as you evaluate what could be happening in your life causing you to feel fatigued. The sooner you can get it straightened out, the quicker you will be leading the life you want.

There are lots of things that you can create with fresh fruit that will get your little one excited. A really great breakfast meal, or any meal for that matter is a large green smoothie. Add fruits and greens to the blender with a table spoon of flax or chia seed and let it rip. Kids will love helping with this as well. It's tasty and very healthy, fruit for energy, greens for minerals, and seeds fulfilling the body's needs for healthy fats.

What you need:

Combine eggs, ground beef, mixed vegetables, rolled oats and cottage cheese in a large bowl. Using clean hands, mix all ingredients together until well-blended. Press mixture into a loaf pan. Bake in a pre-heated oven (350F) for 40 minutes. Cool completely then refrigerate overnight before serving.

Pooch Fruit and Veggie Blend

What you need:

  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 1 banana, sliced
  • 2 cups cooked quinoa
  • 1 cup frozen peas, cooked

Line a baking sheet with tin foil. Using a fork, pierce several holes into the sweet potato. Place sweet potato in the baking sheet and bake in a pre-heated oven for 1 hour. Cool sweet potato when ready then chop into small pieces. Mix together sweet potato, banana slices, quinoa and peas in 3 equal servings. Store uneaten servings in the freezer.

Ultimate Meat Cake for Dogs

What you need:

  • 8 eggs
  • 4 large carrots, peeled and grated
  • 2 large potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 2 large celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 3/4 kilograms ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 1 1/2 cups regular rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 dash salt

In a large bowl, mix together eggs, carrots, potatoes, celery and ground beef. Stir in brown rice, rolled oats, olive oil and salt. Divide meat mixture evenly into muffin cups, pat down with a spatula to make mixture firm. Bake in a pre-heated oven (400F) until the surface of the cakes feel set, about 45 to 50 minutes. When ready, allow to cool completely. Turn muffin cups aside down over dog bowl to serve. Place in re-sealable plastic bags and freeze to store.
